Saahi our famous racehorse
Saahi
is Arabic for faithful friend, he is our half a million dollar ex-racehorse.
Once owned by Sheik Mohammed, Saahi is a handsome bay coloured 12 year old
American thoroughbred standing 16 hands high.
The breed thoroughbred is the only breed manufactured by man. The racing
industry wastes over 5000 of these magnificent animals each year when their
careers come to an abrupt end. What happens to them then? Most end up on the
scrap heap, driven through the sales, ending up underfed and neglected, as they
do not make suitable riding horses, but they are very sort after by the meat
trade. Saahi had come to the end of his career, having won six hurdle races, and
two flat races, the impact of racing took its toll on his limbs. He was sent
over to Ireland to have his tendons hot fired (firing is an application of red
hot irons to the legs with the purpose of inducing a severe inflammation. It is
a counter irritation to effect a cure) it is an ILLEGAL practice in this
country. This barbaric practice did not help him, and he continued to have bouts
of lameness and ended up being sold from owner to owner. It became apparent he
was only worth meat money and a well wisher gave him to the Sanctuary knowing he
would be safe for life within the Sanctuary. Saahi is now a very happy horse, he
loves to roll upside down in the mud. He had to learn to communicate, with the
other horses, learning their language, he was never allowed to socialize before.
