Parkgate Pony Sanctuary
Volunteer information
Everyone who works for Parkgate Pony Sanctuary is a volunteer. We have no paid staff. All our funding comes from public donations.
The Sanctuary volunteers are responsible for the day to day care and welfare of over 35 horses and ponies at 3 sites:
Highfield Stables, Davenport Road, Lower Heswall, where any horses requiring regular special care or training are kept.
Parkgate fields, Boathouse Lane, Parkgate.
Neston fields, Raby Park Road, Neston.
Highfield Stables has facilities for making drinks, a toilet and secure storage.
Parkgate & Neston fields have no facilities.
What volunteers do
Horse/pony care
Check all horses/ponies daily. Check that they have plenty of water, check for any signs of injury, illness or unusual behaviour, check fences and gates are secure.
Muck out stables, make up beds and tidy the yard at Highfield Stables.
Give feed / hay as required
Groom and wash them.
Clean tack and rugs
Helping during farrier & vet visits
Exercise and train the horses & ponies.
Field maintenance
Clear poisonous plants from the fields
Carry out repairs to fences & gates.
Muck pick
Clear up litter
Cut back hedges and paths
Events & Fundraising
Organise events
Run fundraising stalls
Help with pony rides at fundraising events.
Help with administration and publicity.
Winter is a hard time. Regardless of the weather, every horse & pony still needs to be checked, fed and watered every day.
